1105.9 miles puts us just past Des Moines Iowa!
Nice view of the skyline!
Here is a map of 7000 year old settlements near the water treatment plant in Des Moines. So if you are a big fan of Pre Historic settlements or water treatment plants this would be the stop for you!
The Iowa state Capitol is one of only two Capitol buildings to use 5 domes, the other being Rhode Island. There are 4 domes surrounding the main golden one in the middle. Worth a pause on our run? I think so!

Sorry for falling behind!
I guess we just really wanted to spend extra time in Lincoln Nebraska!
30 miles for me over the past few weeks.

This puts us in Lincoln Nebraska! State capital and second largest city.
That tall building is the capital building, which is obviously not the typical capital building style we are used to.
While on a break from our run lets see something of particular interest to several members of our team, the international quilting museum!
For those of us not interested in quilts let's head over for a cornhuskers game!
Keep running! Or walking jogging hiking biking etc

688 miles puts us a few miles past North Platte, NE.
Interestingly, North Platte is home to the largest rail yard in the world, which is overlooked by the Golden Spike Tower.
Maybe while we take a break from the long run we have been on we can go in the tower and see what its all about
What do you all think....is it the biggest? Looks like a lot of trains to me
Maybe we should catch a train instead of doing all this running!

I didnt get updates from Leslie and Steve and Company, thats probably my fault for not keeping it going! K dont give up on the working out, lets keep going! These are updated as best as I can gather, I think everyone missed a week last week except I had mine and Caitlins totals, so those two are up to date. So if you kept track or want to post your miles from last week on this post or on the week end post this week, feel free to do so and we will add it in!
We passed Cheyenne Wy, and are about 2 miles from the border of Wyoming and Nebraska! Progress!
Apparently our escape starts in Cheyenne Wyoming. Will have to remember that next time I need an escape. haha
We are currently entering the town of Pine Bluffs Wyoming!
There we can find the Texas Trail Museum.

Very nice everyone! Lets see where we are.....345 miles puts us 10 miles past Elk Mountain Wyoming!
(Correction...I realized I added the miles without all of the miles totaled and we are actually at 360 miles, but since I already wrote the rest of the post we are going with 345. Will be updated further next week.)
This is Elk Mountain Wy. When I googled it I only got pictures of the actual mountain like this
If the beautiful mountain and the nothing next to the interstate did not convince you to pull into Elk Mountain for the night, let me show you where you could stay!
Apparently the hotel is old and Elk Mountain was an important stop for settlers traveling west. Similar idea to last weeks post. I am seeing a pattern here in Wyoming.
Elk Mountain (the mountain) was first named Medicine Butte, as an interesting tidbit.
Keep up the exercise, and maybe we will make it somewhere that will not just be a "well some covered wagons went through here a while back..."

We went 110.1 miles this week! Excellent work! That puts us at 221.9 miles the past two weeks!
That puts us between Rock Springs Wyoming and Wamsutter Wyoming.
Evanston
Wamsutter....I love the sign, and the nothing that is around it.
So points of interest along the way...Shortly before we arrived in Lyman Wyoming we passed Fort Bridger.
Fort Bridger in 1850
Pony Express Route, stopped in Fort Bridger where the Pony Express barn is still standing, as is a wall used by the Mormon settlersto defend themselves.
Fort Bridger was established in 1842 on the Green River by Jim Bridger, and was an important resupply point for the Oregon, California, and Mormon trails. The Army apparently also had an outpost here during the "Utah war"in 1858. President Buchanan sent the Army to Utah to install a new governor, replacing Brigham Young, as well as set up a military presence in 1857. Brigham Young sent raiders to burn supply trains and several other forts/citys along the way in order to slow down Johnston's army, and even set fire to Fort Bridger to keep it from the Army. The Army, slowed by the loss of supply trains and expected outposts, wintered near the fort, and Johnston's army went to Salt Lake City in the spring, leaving two companies behind to establish an official Army Post at Fort Bridger The other troops went to SLC and eventually established Camp Floyd, south of Salt Lake City.
The members of the church in Northern Utah moved south for a time under the direction of Brigham Young to avoid becoming casualties, filling their homes with straw in order to be burned if necessary. They left behind some young men to work the fields and irrigate, etc, but buried church records as well as stone cut for the Temple and the foundation, leaving a field above the Temple to remove any suspicion. The majority of the members from northern Utah lived more south for a while, (south as in Provo, Spanish fork area I believe). When the press found out that the members were moving south, it became a story of the United States persecuting the innocent, and gained national and international attention, pressuring the US to let up. After peace talks were completed and it was decided that the army would not invade but instead set up an outpost at Camp Floyd, the members of the church moved back north.
So, thats Fort Bridger.

End of week 1 results
Well thanks everyone for participating, I think this is going to be fun! Remember, distances are recorded from walking, running, etc. We will give 4 miles for an hour of physical activity if it is not able to be directly calculated in miles, assuming it is at least moderately vigorous, indifferent of age.
Total distance: 111.87 miles
Rachel - 18.8 miles
Caitlin - 18.57 miles
Reece - 18.5 miles
Leslie- 15.5 miles
Ivin- 12 miles
Steve- 9 miles
Brooke- 5 miles
Lucy- 4 miles
Josh - 4 miles
Katrina - 3.5 miles
Garth - 3 miles
Patrick??????
111.87 miles from Salt Lake puts us....somewhere between Evanston and Lyman Wyoming.
Miles to go to New York: About 2060
Evanston
Points of interest passed include Parley's canyon, Park City, and the famous Henefer-Echo Wildlife Management Area. I actually don't know if it is famous, just saw it on the map. Also, if you head up by Jeremy Ranch near Park City you can see part of the trail where the pioneers came into Utah. Head up the trail, see a monument at the top, and then head down into Emmigration Canyon. It makes for a great bike ride and hike.
Here are a few pics from the trail, in the first you can see the trail marker an where you can bike on the trail. It's pretty cool. I wonder how the pioneers would have fared if they had mountain bikes? In the second you see the view from the top looking down into emigration canyon. The trail can be followed from there as well.
If anyone wants to join, feel free to! We are going to come up with a sweet t shirt design for participants. Plus, it's just fun!

Get Moving Bakers!
Get Moving Bakers!
In order to motivate us all to exercise more, I have decided to create a little friendly competition among family members. All families are welcome, whether Bakers, Weeds, Taits, or Chipmans. Starting on February 24 2014 keep track of how far you walk, run, jog, etc, and post it to the blog at the end of the week. I will have a new post up on Sunday of each week, comment on it with your totals. Estimates are fine. Steps from a pedometer are fine, I will convert that into a mileage total. Estimates from basketball, football, soccer, walks, whatever is fine...ballpark a figure. I will keep tallies of everyone's totals, and will post those in order to motivate each other and create a little friendly competition. The winner will receive a prize...how long this goes and what prize depends on how many of you all actually participate! Also, I was thinking it would be fun to do T-shirts for all those who participate.
Also, to make it a bit more fun, I will keep track of how far we have gone collectively week by week. So...let's say we are going from Salt Lake City to.....New York City. According to google, it is a total of 2171 miles. So let's get moving!!!!!
Start of Week 1-Currently in Salt Lake City, Utah
